I’ve always heard the term “It takes a village” and thought it was something lost to the ages. Lost to a simpler time when women stayed home with the kids, lived in smaller communities (huts anyone?), grew their own food, shared the responsibilities of raising the youth with her neighbours. But as I grow up (or age as some would say), I realize the term “village” is a lot like “circle”.
You’ve heard, “Your circle matters”, right? Well it does. And it does take a village. It doesn’t have to be a circle of CEO’s or mothers, or painters or outdoorsy people, or whatever clique you usually find yourself in. It should be a group of humans that have your back. That speak highly of you when you aren’t around. People that are there for you when times are tough, when you’re not thinking straight, when you feel like you are going to crash. People that want to see you succeed. Want to see you happy. That make you feel good just being in their presence.
Your circle; your village, should be full of people who want the best for you in all aspects of life.
My village consists of friends, family, and friends who are family. It’s made up of people I have met throughout my life. A girlfriend I met in high-school, a fellow grocery store employee, a coworker I met at an office job, a neighbour who bonded over the love of the outdoors, individuals who bonded over the trials of college, an artist at a Christmas store, a mother & a healer I met at a community association meeting, a man I met playing mini-golf, a client who brings peace to people’s worlds, someone who provides relaxation & very special women who believe in the power of gathering together in a circle & the power of the moon. There are aunts & uncles, cousins and in-laws and whomever else the universe puts into my path.
We may not be close enough to share huts(some are provinces away!), or on the same paths in life, but I know if I need them I can call on them ( & I hope they know the same in return).
So although the traditional idea of a “village” isn’t really what we see today; it is still very much alive.
Who is in your Village? Yours may be smaller or it may be larger. Regardless - take time to think and appreciate everyone in your circle. I know I do.
Thank you for reading my current ramblings…
